The Workshop Whisperer’s Top Five Tips For Retaining Talent

The Workshop Whisperer HR Systems

TALENT, and the acquisition of them, is seen as a huge issue for most auto repair business owners. In my last post, I shared my TOP 5 TIPS FOR HIRING A QUALITY NEW TEAM MEMBER, and this week I want to share with you my TOP 5 TIPS FOR RETAINING THEM.

As you know, finding them is only half the battle. You need to have them engaged and happy in their role, but how?

MY TOP 5 TIPS FOR RETAINING TALENT

Tip 1: Know the value proposition you offer to your team. Ask yourself constantly “what makes this a great place to work?”. Do a health check on the company culture often, and quickly deal with issues that upset workplace balance.

Tip 2: Regularly provide open feedback forums for your talent to let you know how they are going. These should be both informal tool box chats, or formal performance discussions. The latter should take place at least every 6 months, but preferably quarterly. Endeavour to find out what motivates them, don’t just assume you know what it is..

Tip 3: Offer up skilling opportunities. Technology changes so rapidly that it makes great business sense for you to ensure that your team has access to the latest technical updates. We all know its a hard task to find time to send your team members out for training, so consider having them trained in house and online. Try www.automatetraining.com.au for up skilling, and for technical information try www.autodata.com.au

Tip 4: LEAD, don’t manage. Set the tone, set the example, and make sure there are no grey areas with expectations by having a clear HR framework. Once you set things in motion, you must stick to it and follow through.

Tip 5: This tip comes from Sir Richard Branson – ” Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to”. Nothing more to say.

So there you have it. My 5 tips for retaining talent. Did you notice we didn’t even talk about $$$? Money is important in the calculation, but it isn’t the sole contributing factor in retaining great team members!

I hope you have a great week in your workshop!
